This course will provide instruction on how to leverage various types of consequences as a leader and manager in an organization from a performance management practitioner perspective. The idea of reinforcement is expanded upon, including an analysis of verbally-mediated, rule-governed, indirect contingencies compared to direct reinforcement. Research is reviewed on the use of "reinforcers" such as Employee-of-the-Month, and how the use of penalties can impact staff behavior compared to the use of positive reinforcement. Finally, common applications of extinction in the workplace are explored, and tips are provided on best practices for the use of extinction, as well as reinforcers and punishers.
